Bill Peduto Coming on Writing on the Floor!

In all the hoopla surrounding the live episode of the show happening next week, we neglected to announce that our studio session for next week will be with City Councilman and the Democratic candidate for Mayor of Pittsburgh, Bill Peduto.

We will be talking to Bill about his work on the Technology and Arts committee, his ideas for his administration should he be elected mayor in the Fall, and discussing his vision for this city as it begins to grow and become younger for the first time since the collapse of the steel industry. This episode will be online early next week. Check back.

Episode 32 - Tyler Crumrine of "NInjas vs. Podcast"!

My guest this week is Tyler Crumrine. Tyler works with a theater group in town and is one of the hosts of the very funny show "Ninjas vs. Podcast" on which he and two of his friends debate a series of "this vs. that" items submitted by users. Tyler is relatively new to the city, though not to the area, and he and I sit down to talk about his show, his work and his take on life here for a new grad.

Mike is that guy. He is a fantastic writer, won the 48 Hour FIlm Project last year, writes and produces "Dodge Intrepid and the Pages of Time" (a 30's style radio adventure), runs the Arcade Comedy Theater with the other 4 founders, does improv, runs the design and branding for Arcade Comedy Theater, OH... he also has a full-time job.

Episode 26 - Greg Gillotti!

This week our guest is Greg Gillotti. Great is an experienced improvisor and comedian who is very deeply plugged into the scene in town. He is on several improv teams, produces and features in "The Death Show" (in which the players improvise a wake for a member of the audience), he teaches classes and has played at the Steel City Improv, The Cabaret at Theater Square, the brand new Arcade Comedy Theater downtown, jams, libraries, outside of diners... Kind of all over the place!

Greg is also a incredibly bright and insightful guy, who loves to analyze comedy. We have a great discussion about how he got started in all this, and then his thoughts on comedy. He is all about the more the merrier and fostering comedy and art. We also get into the nuances and differences in the stand up and improv worlds, as they continue to merge and cross-over.

It is an exciting time for comedy, and Greg talks shop like few others can!

Episode 24 - Musical Open Mics (With John Hayes and Brandon Martin!)

Well hello, and Happy Friday! Today's episode is all about musical open mics. Two of them, to be exact.

We first sit down with John Hayes who runs the Pittsburgh Songwriters' Circle Acoustic Open Stage and Bloomfield Bridge Tavern. This mic happens every Tuesday and is a really nice, accepting room for musicians of any experience level. For more information on this mic check them out at their events page.

After that Zach talks to Brandon Martin of Touchfaster Entertainment. Brandon and Touchfaster produce an open mic at James Street Gastropub every other Tuesday that is hopping. This one is different in that the mic caters really well to bands getting up. You can get information about this mic at their Facebook page. Social media FTW!

Both mics are awesome, and always a good time. Enjoy!

Episode 23 - Arcade Comedy Theater!

This week it's Kristy Nolen and Mike Rubino from the Brand New Arcade Comedy Theater in the heart of the Cultural District in Downtown Pittsburgh. They are 2 of the 5 brilliant improvisers and comedians who said, "You what there isn't enough of around here? Places dedicated to comedy."

Less than a year later, the doors are open, the shows are going up, the reviews are in, and they are overwhelmingly positive.

Shows are going up on Friday and Saturday nights (two shows each night) for now, and they are booking some of the most interesting variety in the city. These guys are great, and they were really entertaining to talk to!

Adventure Land, Zack and Miri, Nickelodeon's Supah Ninjas, Batman... and many many many more! Katie is super fun, and this was a hard one to get done because we talked about so much cool stuff - so this is basically a "best of our conversation" episode.

Aaron is a truly hard-working comedian who tours the country with the likes of Josh Blue, Bob Saget, Pablo Fransisco, and so many more. Aaron is, in many ways, the godfather of the Pittsburgh Comedy world. He runs several open mics, fosters the community, runs shows, and does all this while working on a serious career in comedy. Note: This episode is a little longer than usual. We cut a lot out, and it still ran long, but it is worth it. Aaron had some amazing things to say.

New Episode - Rachel Carlson from Yelp!

Hey everyone, here is the latest episode of the show. Rachel Carlson form Yelp stops by, and talks about all (or most) of what she does with that organization. She is the Pittsburgh community manager/marketing director/party planner/ambassador... pretty much everything that one person could possibly do. Rachel is one of those people who is so incredibly well-suited for what she does, it is almost like the position was created specifically for her. She is a big fan of the city, and spreading what is cool, and getting as many people involved as possible. This was a really fun conversation.

New Episode Coming Next Week

It seems that our production schedule is beginning to look more and more like that of SNL. We have a several weeks with new episodes, followed by a week or two of planning, scheduling, coordinating, and then more episodes.

Upcoming guests will include Rachel Carlson, Yelp's Pittsburgh community organizer and an all-around foodie/social media guru.

Also a few more commercially successful of Pittsburgh's entertainers are slated to stop by, and Ron Placone will return to the show. Ron has been having a banner year with his own one-man show at the Pittsburgh Improv Theater, and touring around to clubs and colleges. Exciting stuff!

New Episdoe - Dan Jenniches!

Hey everyone! Here is the latest episode of Writing on the Floor, with an awesome guest, Dan Jenniches. Dan pronounces his last name like the first book of the Judeo-Christian canonical works, or that band that launched Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins (Genesis, we could have just said that I guess), and among a few local comedians you may have heard him called "Dan Generation".

Anyway... we are getting off topic. Dan is a local comedian who is super funny, especially when he is talking about all the ridiculous stuff that he has witnessed as he works toward his pharmacy degree. Dan sits down to talk about all the usual fun stuff, plus recount some crazy nights in the local standup scene.

If you want to see Dan you can look for him to be featured at a show at The Pleasure Bar in the Bloomfield neighborhood on September 28th, during the Italian Festival. For more information on that show and open mics check out PGHComedy.com.

WOTF Episdoe #15 - Robert X

[NSFW Language in this one. Use Headphones!] That's right, world! Robert X is this week's guest. Those of you who are tuned into the comedy scene in town probably are asking "how is that possible? Robert moved to Philly weeks ago!" Well, you are astute observers, but this was recorded before Robert left us. So there.

Robert is one of the most cerebral comedians to come out of the Pittsburgh comedy scene in recent years. He showed up one night in a Members Only Jacket with his 1950's style glasses and began telling jokes about the passive voice. His short-form style features jokes just longer than what would be considered "One-Liners" but they are always smart, funny and accurate.

Robert hasn't been at it that long, but he and Zach became friends pretty much from that first night Robert showed up at The Pleasure Bar in Bloomfield. Robert will be missed, as he tries his luck in Philly, and eventually New York.

Robert and Zach talk about comedy styles, delivery, how Robert got into it, and much more!

New Episode- Jeff Konkle!

This week's episode is here, featuring writer and comedian Jeff Konkle. I consider Jeff to be one of the best writing comedian around, and I'm not just saying that. Jeff is hilarious, and a really fun guy to talk to. I had a great conversation with him about his approach to writing, and comedy and standup, his upbringing and all sorts of things! It was a blast.

You can check out all of Jeff's writing and posts at www.konkdaddy.com and I would HIGHLY recommend heading over there and reading any and all of his comedy posts. They are great reads. Jeff has also played shows all over, and been featured on WDVE radio with Jim and Randy.

New Name, Same Show

I've been struggling with the name of this show since it started. When I had the initial idea I knew what I wanted to do, but I didn't have a name I liked.  We talked it over, and decided to go with "The Steel City Podcast" and while it was alright for the time, the name never sat well with me.

Recently I've been feeling a strong urge to change it and make the name sometime unique to give the show it's own identity.  We needed to find something that would stand out, but also had some sort of meaning in regards to what we try to do here.

At it's core, this is a show about people.  People who are worth talking to, and people whose stories are worth hearing.  As the show has developed in the early episodes I've found that conversations are hitting on people's approach to their work, as well as how and where they got started with what they do.

So we've decided to name it "Writing On The Floor."

What does that mean?  I'll tell you.

In the short–lived, but much–loved Aaron Sorkin TV show “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip” Matt Perry plays a sketch comedy writer at a fictional Saturday Night Live-type show.  His character, also named Matt, is reminded of an early office he once had at the show, which was so small that if he held a pencil in each hand he could write on opposite walls at the same time.  Matt replies, “That wasn’t my first office, that was my second office. My first office was on the floor outside the writers room. I sat there with newspapers and a legal pad.”

This is a common theme among writers and artists.  And at some level, people never seem to leave that place where they started. They carry it with them for the rest of their career.  That’s what it’s about… it’s about the feeling that we are all still writing on the floor.

So, that's it.

New Episode- Ron Placone!

Today! Comedian Ron Placone stops by the show. Ron is a very funny guy, and a great comedian. I've always been impressed by his conversational style on stage and his commentary on life and the news. Ron talked about pop-culture, old TV shows, nerded out with Zach over music and talked about comedy and his approach to the biz...

Ron also hosts and produces a news satire segment called "Thoughts, Rants and Cold Coffee" and he's given us permission to start using it as a segment here on this very show! So here it is, Ron Placone and the first appearance of "Thoughts, Rants and Cold Coffee". Enjoy.

New Episode- Ben Hardt!

Here it is! The latest episode with musician and all-around cool guy, Ben Hardt. Ben fuses symphonic strings with amazing rock music to create a pretty unique and awesome sound. His first release, Ben Hardt and His Symphony, was a huge hit and he was named WYEP's "Artist of the Year" a few years ago.

Ben is currently working on a three-album project that he will be releasing one song at a time online. He talks about this enticing new project, and about art in this post-recession world. It's a great conversation, and I've even peppered in some of the tracks from his first release! Enjoy.

Tomorrow

Ok guys:

So apologies on Ben Hardt's episode not going up this past week... I've been waiting and waiting on Ben to hear when his first single off the new project is going to drop, and I finally cannot wait anymore! Ben was just too much fun to talk to, and had far too many amazing things to say about music, and life and his philosophy (this guy is deep, I tell you!)

So, tomorrow... Saturday, October 29, 2011 I'm posting his episode. I won't give away any of his secrets that he's asked me to hold in (like the new name of his band... which is also awesome) but I WILL be posting his episode! So that is it. I'm posting the show no matter what. Hold me to it!

~Zach

P.S. You can download his first release "Ben Hardt and His Symphony" here!

Ben Hardt! (Coming Soon)

We are announcing a new episode to be coming soon with musician Ben Hardt! If you don't know Ben and his work, you are in for a treat. Actually, you are in for a treat even if you DO know his work!

Ben is a musician (and most-likely a genius) who I met several years ago when he was WYEP reigning Artist of the Year. Ben has a great and original style combining great rock music with symphonic strings in an amazing way. Check out his first release "Ben Hard and his Symphony" here.  After you hear "Avalanche" or "Looking Up While the Bombs Fall Down" you will understand why I say genius.

Ben is working on a new project- THREE albums, and he shared a lot with me about his vision for these. I won't give away the whole conversation but if you like awesome music, and stories about England in WWII you are going to have your mind blown.

Occupy Pittsburgh

So, the Occupy Pittsburgh Protest began today, and I headed down to check out what was happening. I was there more as an observer than anything else, curious about what is motivating this "99%" so organize and demonstrate. I managed to grab some interesting audio, and talked to a few people, so I'll be posting an episode soon about what was going on. For now, here are some pictures I snapped with my phone.

New Episode- Amy Staggs!

Good friend and awesome person Amy Staggs stops by the show to talk about her work as an actress and stand-in here in town including working for ANNE HATHAWAY! Yes, that Anne Hathaway. Amy talks about that experience and explains what it is exactly that a stand-in does.

Amy and her husband Brett (see episode 1 of this podcast to hear more from Brett) moved to Austen years ago, and after some time away felt that call to come back to Pittsburgh, and they make this city that much more awesome! Amy talks about her love of the city, and weighs in on the feud between her husband Brett and her brother Reid. (Reid has vowed to kill Brett at some point in the future).

This Week: Amy Staggs!

This week's show features Amy Staggs. Amy is a wonderful person, and while she is married to previous guest Brett Staggs, she is an interesting person in her own rite! Amy has been acting and modeling in the area for years, and not once but twice has served as a stand-on for Anne Hathaway. Yes, that's right... ANNE HATHAWAY. They Anne Hathaway. From Batman. From Love and Other Drugs.  From the Devil Wears Parada. NOT the wife of Shakespeare.

Amy gave a wonderful look into the film world in Pittsburgh, as well as poured out her love for this amazing city, and (of course) weighed in on the love/hate relationship/feud between her brother and her husband.

The show goes live Friday.

New Episode- Drea Chamberlain!

Here is the newest episode of the show, with Drea Chamberlain! Drea has just passed on her crown as Miss Three Rivers in the Miss America circuit! How sweet is that?

Also Drea talks about her volunteer work, and shares some of her wisdom and calms fears about the state of our economy and investing. Did I just saw "economy" and "investing"? Yes I did! Drea knows about that stuff because she isn't just a beauty queen, but a financial queen as well. She is a renaissance woman and a Pittsburgher. Boom.

Tomorrow: Miss Three Rivers Drea Chamberlain!

New episode posts at noon tomorrow with Miss Three Rivers, DREA CHAMBERLAIN!

Drea stopped by to talk about her reign this past year as Miss Three Rivers in the Miss America Circuit, and to talk about her volunteer efforts and to use her financial expertise to stave off our fear about the economy. It's awesome!

Noon. Tomorrow. Boom.

Think Different.

I started using apple products around 1987, and I've never looked back. Steve Jobs was a visionary who saw the potential to put the power of computers in the hands of creative people, and empower them to create. Thanks Steve.
